Bitcoin breaks $81k on CPI print as agent micro-transactions cross 138M

7 min read · 12 sources

TL;DR
  • Bitcoin fell to $80,764 after US core CPI hit 3.7%, triggering $951.4 million in total liquidations.
  • Standard Chartered pushed its $2 trillion stablecoin target out two years to 2030 as aggregate supply hovered at $309 billion.
  • Coinbase's x402 protocol logged over 138 million transactions from autonomous agents on Base, up from 1,500 in mid-2025.
  • BlackRock's digital asset AUM rebounded 63% quarter-over-quarter to $79.6 billion, though it remains down 23% from its 2025 high.
  • Turkish police arrested Richard Heart in Istanbul under an Interpol warrant alongside the seizure of $600,000 in cash and hardware.

A hotter-than-expected US core inflation print of 3.7% hit crypto and equities hard over the last 24 hours. Bitcoin broke lower to $80,764, dragging Ethereum down 6.5% to $2,353, while leveraged positions bore the brunt of the move: CoinGlass recorded $951.4 million in liquidations, of which $876.3 million were longs. Asian equities took an even worse beating, with the Kospi dumping 8% - spearheaded by 9% drops in Samsung and SK Hynix - and the Nikkei sliding 5.2%.

Behind the macro volatility, operational crypto plumbing is shifting rapidly. Stablecoin volume has exploded even as circulating float stalls, autonomous software agents are stress-testing Layer 2 networks with hundreds of millions of sub-cent transactions, and Ethereum researchers are pitching a major re-architecture of execution proofs.

Autonomous AI agents executed over 138 million cryptocurrency payments through Coinbase’s x402 protocol on Base, with more than 87% falling between 0.01 cents and 10 cents.

Macro print rattles leverage while tech stocks slide

The 3.7% core CPI number revived fears of persistent interest rates, sparking an immediate risk-off rotation that exposed over-leveraged derivative books. Beyond BTC and ETH, alternative Layer 1s and legacy privacy coins took severe hits: Solana fell 4.8%, XRP shed 4.7%, and Zcash tumbled 12.8%.

The wipeout demonstrates the continuing sensitivity of the crypto derivatives complex to global sovereign bond pricing. When rates look stubborn, liquidations cascade down the order book quickly: the $876.3 million in wiped longs represents one of the largest single-day flushes of bull leverage seen this quarter.

Standard Chartered pushes its $2T stablecoin forecast out to 2030

Source: links.tldrnewsletter.com ↗

Standard Chartered analyst Geoffrey Kendrick has moved the bank’s projection for a $2 trillion stablecoin market cap from 2028 out to 2030. The reason is a stalled baseline: total stablecoin supply has sat trapped between $300 billion and $320 billion for the past 12 months, hovering currently at roughly $309 billion. Kendrick attributes the plateau to cyclical headwinds in broad crypto trading activity.

Yet underlying network throughput tells a completely different story. Monthly transfer volumes are averaging nearly $10 trillion this year, more than doubling the $4 trillion monthly run rate logged in 2025. Aggregate velocity has doubled to roughly 30x.

Different tokens serve fundamentally different workloads. USDC currently runs at an estimated velocity of 80x, driven by modern merchant settlement and emerging automated agent runtimes. USDT runs closer to a 7x velocity, dominated by emerging-market capital preservation and balance-sheet savings. Looking forward, Kendrick flags competition in developed markets from newer offerings like USDG, M^0, and the bank-backed A+ network, though regulatory friction - notably the incoming US GENIUS Act taking effect this January - remains the biggest headwind to offshore liquidity.

Rapidblocks: Decoupling EVM execution proofs from state roots

Source: ethresear.ch ↗

Engineers designing rollup sequencing and validity pipelines have a new architecture to review. A proposal published on ethresear.ch details “Rapidblocks with split proofs”, a framework that enables execution proofs to remain valid across different slots even if the global state changes.

Normally, validity proofs bind a specific pre-state root to a post-state root. If an earlier transaction modifies any unrelated slot in the state trie, the pre-state root changes, invalidating a generated proof and requiring expensive re-execution. Rapidblocks breaks a monolithic block proof into three discrete components:

  • $\Pi_T$: Verifies pure transaction execution logic strictly against the specific values read by the transaction, without binding to an overall state root.
  • $\Pi_{in}$: A Merkle inclusion proof verifying that the read values existed in the pre-state root.
  • $\Pi_{out}$: A Merkle proof verifying that written state modifications correctly update into the post-state root.

By committing directly to input values inside the block header rather than the global state root, $\Pi_T$ stays valid across slots as long as nobody touches the accessed keys. This lets validators advance block consensus asynchronously without waiting for complete state-root finalization. However, production readiness is still far off: blocks require proving times under 2.5 seconds, witness sizing for Merkle-Patricia tries remains unsolved, and formal verification has so far only passed bounded model checking on small configurations.

SEC greenlights metric-based binary options for equities

Source: threadreaderapp.com ↗

In an unexpected convergence of prediction markets and regulated options, the SEC approved binary contracts tied to fundamental company performance metrics. The underlying assets cover over 20 firms, including Coinbase, Nvidia, Tesla, MARA, and SpaceX.

Structured identically to binary event markets, each contract pays a fixed $1 if the metric hits an agreed threshold, expiring worthless if it misses. Cboe will list over 100 variations, allowing traders to hedge or speculate directly on metrics like Nvidia data center revenue, Coinbase spot trading volume, MARA Bitcoin mining yields, or SpaceX launch revenue. Retail brokerage Robinhood is handling retail launch distribution, waiving trading fees on the product through the end of the year.

Agentic commerce generates 138 million micro-transactions

Autonomous software is turning into a measurable consumer of network bandwidth. Chainalysis data indicates AI agents executed over 138 million transactions on Coinbase’s Base Layer 2 via the x402 protocol between mid-2025 and Q3 2026. For comparison, that metric sat at roughly 1,500 transactions in mid-2025.

The transaction size distribution explains why these workloads avoid traditional payment rails: more than 87% of all recorded transfers fell between $0.01 and $0.10. Credit card interchange structures make sub-dime payments cost-prohibitive, leaving low-fee stablecoin rails as the only practical settlement layer for automated API calls and per-query inference.

The transaction demographic shows geographic specialization:

  • Wallets associated with US entities generated 88.1% of all AI inference spend.
  • Chinese wallets accounted for only 0.1% of inference payments, but made up the majority of machine-to-machine spending on automated smart-contract auditing and code-analysis services.

TRM Labs added a note of caution, warning that an undetermined share of the 138 million transactions likely stems from looping cron scripts and wash-volume self-dealing rather than strictly autonomous LLM-driven agents.

Cross-border remittance rails shift toward stablecoins in Canada

Cross-border peer-to-peer flows are moving rapidly to chain settlement. Chainalysis reported that remittance-sized cryptocurrency flows from Canada to India, China, and the Philippines rose 141% year-over-year to $2.36 billion through June 2026. The total volume spans 3.56 million transactions, with an average ticket size of $663.

Canada leads the G7 with a 23% foreign-born population, driving concentrated remittance corridors. Traditional services average fees of 6.7% according to World Bank metrics. On-chain settlement drastically reduces base transfer costs, driving stablecoins to 44% of Canadian dollar order-book volume on exchanges as of June 2026 (up from 30% year-over-year). For backend fintech engineers, integrating stablecoin rails is shifting from an experimental hedge into a table-stakes mechanism to avoid legacy intermediary margins.

Richard Heart arrested in Istanbul

Turkish law enforcement arrested HEX, PulseChain, and PulseX founder Richard Heart (Richard James Schueler) alongside his wife in Istanbul’s Beşiktaş district. The raid was coordinated between Turkish intelligence and national police following an Interpol Red Notice filed by Finland alleging assault and tax fraud dating back to 2024.

Officers confiscated $600,000 in cash, 24 luxury wristwatches, gold jewelry, 7 firearms along with 1,360 rounds of ammunition, and a bank of hardware including 20 GPUs, 14 SSDs, 12 mobile devices, 6 laptops, and two drones. Heart was previously charged by the US SEC in 2023 for selling unregistered securities and allegedly misappropriating $12 million of investor funds for personal luxury purchases.

BlackRock digital asset AUM rebounds to $79.6B

Source: coindesk.com ↗

BlackRock’s crypto exchange-traded products saw AUM climb 63% quarter-over-quarter to $79.6 billion by the end of Q3 2026. The increase brought in $39 million in quarterly fees and securities lending revenue for the asset manager.

Asset recovery did the heavy lifting: of the $30.8 billion increase in AUM, $22.9 billion came from asset price appreciation, while net organic inflows contributed $7.9 billion. Despite the aggressive recovery from first-half outflows, the funds remain 23% down from their absolute high of $104 billion reached in 2025, underscoring how directly crypto ETF fee revenues correlate to token price volatility compared to traditional fixed-income funds.
