Inference Deflation Meets a $20bn Revenue Haircut

Not investment advice. This is a hypothetical, automated model portfolio published for information and entertainment. It is not investment advice, not a recommendation to buy or sell any security, and no real money is invested. Positions are simulated, priced at the next session's open after each decision, and include an assumed trading cost. Returns are total returns and include dividends. Past performance of a simulated strategy says nothing about future results. Do your own research.

TL;DR
  • Selling NET (Cloudflare), $29,568.
  • Selling AVGO (Broadcom), $27,509.
  • Buying AMZN (Amazon), $27,486. Kuiper's thousandth satellite keeps the Starlink challenge on schedule while Strands Box extends AWS's agent-infrastructure franchise into safety tooling.
  • Plus 1 smaller adjustment, listed in full in the trades table below.
  • OpenAI disclosed annualised revenue near $50bn, roughly $20bn below its prior $70bn estimate, ahead of a planned early-2027 IPO, the first hard crack in the AI monetization narrative.
  • Anthropic cut Haiku 5.5 inference costs roughly 75% versus 4.5 and halved Sonnet 5.5 cache-read pricing, making the model-layer price war explicit rather than implied.

When the router with the spend caps is the most profitable place to stand, the models underneath have already lost the pricing argument.

The only hard number of the day

OpenAI disclosed annualised revenue near $50bn, roughly $20bn below its prior $70bn estimate, as it lines up an IPO for early 2027. Everything else today was announcements; this is a revision of a monetization estimate by the company that anchors the demand narrative for everyone building capacity against it. We went negative on Oracle yesterday at conviction 4 on the gap between AI-driven cloud growth and the durability of that demand - nothing in Oracle’s own disclosure changed today, but this is the first external datapoint supporting that caution, so the call stands rather than reverses. The second-order read: when the flagship lab marks down its own revenue while shipping faster API tiers, the binding constraint is willingness to pay, not capability. Capacity suppliers and anyone reselling inference wear that.

The price war is now explicit

Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5 at roughly 75% lower inference cost than 4.5, with an adjustable effort setting and a 72.4% OSWorld 2.1 score, halved Claude Sonnet 5.5 cache-read pricing, and shipped Claude Code “mods” plugins. OpenAI countered with an Ultrafast API tier for gpt-6-astra and gpt-6.1-sol built around persistent WebSockets for agentic throughput, plus the Open Responses spec for multi-provider interfaces - a commoditization play that makes any model swappable. Google Cloud shipped two Gemini agent SKUs, a universal work agent and a Workspace agent across Gmail, Docs and Drive, with multi-model routing, governance and spend caps. That feature list is the tell: enterprises now procure agents the way they procure cloud, with cost controls. The non-obvious beneficiary is the router - when models compete on price, the governed layer above them captures the margin, which is why our positive Alphabet stance holds. One honest caveat against our negative Datadog call from late September: agent spend governance becoming a procurement requirement is exactly the category AI-cost observability lives in. Worth watching, not yet a reversal.

Microsoft's spray day

Six separate Microsoft items: the XP entertainment unit to turn Xbox IP into film, TV and theme parks; the Labor Department suspending PERM green-card certifications for Microsoft and other firms, which is policy friction rather than company fault but still slows talent mobility; Microsoft IQ with 30-plus Copilot skills across Dynamics 365; the Quicksand QEMU-based agent sandbox; Project HydraFusion routing Copilot tasks between on-device RTX Spark GPUs and cloud; and the hybrid-intelligence Windows strategy with MXC containers. The engineering is coherent - on-device routing is Microsoft’s best structural defense against inference deflation, because the cheapest token is the one that never leaves the laptop. But six announcements in one day with no pricing evidence reads as spray, and the model-layer price war plus the OpenAI revision weaken the willingness-to-pay assumption under Copilot and Dynamics monetization. We escalate Microsoft from negative conviction 2 to 3 - an intensification, not a reversal; what changed is that the deflation evidence moved from API price lists to a revenue estimate.

Agent safety becomes a platform feature

Microsoft’s Quicksand sandboxes agents in QEMU VMs without Docker or root on x86_64 and ARM64; AWS open-sourced Strands Box for the same job; Anthropic launched a Cyber Mission initiative with a free OSS Scanner. Two hyperscalers shipping agent sandboxes in the same week means safety is consolidating into platform features rather than remaining a standalone category - the same absorption pattern the identity vendors went through. NVIDIA’s open-sourced LongLive suite for long-video generation and robotics, with NVFP4 quantization, is the same playbook from the silicon side: give away the application layer, standardize the numeric format, protect accelerator demand. Consistent with our neutral.

The quiet corners

Amazon built its 1,000th Kuiper satellite with commercial service targeted for late 2026 - a real milestone on a slow fuse, since revenue is a year out at Amazon’s scale. Apple’s late-October M6 wave (iPad mini, 14-inch MacBook Pro, iMac) includes a touch-screen MacBook, a genuine about-face after years of resisting touch on the Mac, but a cadence product at Apple’s size. SAP formalized SAP Pay stablecoin settlement in Cloud ERP via Circle’s Arc across 89 corridors and 40-plus currencies - the third straight week of this story, now with corridor specifics and still no disclosed revenue. Heavy on announcements, light on hard numbers today - and the single hard number is the one that matters.
