The AI buildout moves off the balance sheet

Not investment advice. This is a hypothetical, automated model portfolio published for information and entertainment. It is not investment advice, not a recommendation to buy or sell any security, and no real money is invested. Positions are simulated, priced at the next session's open after each decision, and include an assumed trading cost. Returns are total returns and include dividends. Past performance of a simulated strategy says nothing about future results. Do your own research.

TL;DR
  • Buying QCOM (Qualcomm), $29,002. A signed multi-year license now spans compute, AI and networking, extending a high-margin royalty franchise beyond handsets, though the accord was largely anticipated.
  • Selling GOOGL (Alphabet), $28,844.
  • Buying NOW (ServiceNow), $28,309. Credit-card pricing with a ten-thousand-dollar floor opens a bottom-up wedge against AI-native service-desk attackers without cannibalizing enterprise contracts.
  • Plus 2 smaller adjustments, listed in full in the trades table below.
  • Amazon is negotiating an $8bn sale-and-leaseback of thousands of Nvidia Grace Blackwell chips, which confirms hyperscale demand while signaling that the biggest capex budgets are now choosing to reserve balance-sheet room rather than own the assets outright.
  • The ChatGPT operator is in talks with a major asset manager and UAE funds for a $30bn round, launched a 32-partner B2B marketplace, is expanding ads inside ChatGPT, and will watermark outputs - a full monetization stack assembling in one week.

The day’s real event is a financing structure, not a product. Amazon is negotiating to sell and lease back roughly $8bn of Nvidia Grace Blackwell hardware - thousands of chips - while the ChatGPT operator circles a $30bn round anchored by a major asset manager and UAE sovereign money. Put side by side, these say the same thing: AI compute demand has outrun the balance sheets that were supposed to carry it, and structured finance is arriving to fill the gap. Everything else on the tape - a signed Qualcomm license, ServiceNow’s credit-card service desk, an Apple foldable milestone - is real but smaller.

Leased fleets can be handed back faster than owned ones, and that option is precisely what the lessor is being paid for.

The buildout learns structured finance

Sale-and-leaseback is the interesting instrument. Amazon keeps the GPUs and the AWS capacity; a private-credit buyer carries the asset and earns the spread. Three second-order reads:

  • For Nvidia, this is demand confirmation - thousands of Grace Blackwell parts moving into one of the three biggest clouds. But it is levered demand. Leased fleets can be handed back faster than owned ones, and that option is precisely what the lessor is being paid for. If AI revenue disappoints next year, the return queue forms at the leasing desk first.
  • For Amazon, it preserves capex headroom at a moment when every hyperscaler is defending free cash flow. The unspoken question is why the largest capex budgets on earth need help financing
